Regardless of your feelings about the results of the election, there's one thing we can all agree on: 2016 has been exhausting. We have been berated with negativity on all fronts, and all of us here at HL have been at a loss for how to reconcile this. We've had to ask ourselves, how do we move forward our mission to empower women when so many women feel discouraged? Well, it means we have to do one of the things women do best: rally. I read a wonderful quote recently that said, "They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds." So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we're going to show how these seeds can flower- how you can continue to make an impact on your world through becoming involved.
As a bonus to encourage you to really do this, we are doing a giveaway for our lovely ladies that participate in the #ARGalsGive week. We want to encourage each of you to donate your time, money, or, resources this week through becoming involved locally, nationally, or globally in a movement that inspires you. Below, we've listed some of the ways you can become more active. These our some of our favorite organizations that can help you find a voice to speak through. We really just want to encourage you each to find at least ONE organization that speaks to what you are most invested in helping change. Once you've found an organization that fits, we want you to share a photo of you doing something with that charity. Maybe it's making a phone call to your representative on their behalf, or maybe it's finally donating those clothes you've had stacked up in your closet. Once you've figured out the organization and the action, you just need to be ready to share how you gave. When you share this with the hashtag #ARGalsGive, it will automatically enter you in a drawing for one of four wonderful prizes donated by some of our favorite strong women. Bang Up Betty, Loblolly, Freckled Hen Farmhouse, and Krauft Cookies have all helped us rally, and hopefully help you too. Don't feel overwhelmed by thinking you don't have enough time or money to give, even giving through sharing information on social media is helpful to these organizations. All support is good support! Wondering what local nonprofits you can get involved in? Below are a few of our favorites. This is by no means a comprehensive list, there are SO many other organizations our there to work with, just try to find an organization whose mission lines up with your passion.
These all touch on some of each of the HL girls' passions.
Nationally: Planned Parenthood ACLU Next Gen Climate Action Earth Justice Council on American-Islamic Relations Anti-Defamation League Border Angels NAACP National Organization for Women Human Rights Campaign League of Women Voters
Ultimately, to be good civil servants, we can all agree that being more involved in local government and national politics is important. We all need to know what policies we support and why and we need to be in contact with the law makers representing our state. Phone calls, letter writing, and emails are all ways to let your elected officials hear your opinions.
If you live in AR, here's a list of all of the officials you can call:
AR Senator Boozman (202) 224-4843
AR Senator Cotton (202) 224-235
