HYGGE [p. hoo-gah]
In both Danish and Norwegian, hygge refers to "a form of everyday togetherness", "a pleasant and highly valued everyday experience of safety, equality, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow."
Even though we've had a mild winter thus far and Spring is on the horizon, creating space for little things that make us happy in our daily lives can be hard. Especially in the winter months. That's why over the next few weeks, we want to create some hygge challenges here on the blog.
If you've never heard of hygge, let me try to explain a little further. To me, hygge is the intentional lifestyle of trying to live happier, cozier, warmer, fuller lives. Do you love to make tea and sit by a roaring fire? This, in essence, is practicing hygge. It's those things that make you feel warmer and happier on the inside, however small they are. They matter.
As the author, Meik Wiking, of The Little Book of Hygge explains, "...spelling and pronouncing hygge is the easy part. Explaining exactly what it is, that's the tricky part. Hygge has been called everything from 'the art of creating intimacy,' 'coziness of the soul,' and 'the absence of annoyance,' to 'taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things,' 'cozy togetherness,' and my personal favorite, 'cocoa by candlelight.'"
I think what Wiking is getting at is that hygge can be defined in many ways; but essentially, it's intentionally trying to create more happiness in your life through self-care.
I highly recommend this book. There are recipes and great tips to practicing hygge. But in essence of what we are trying to do, it seems like it could be done better in community. I'm one of those people who loves a group to hold me accountable when trying new things. If that's you, I think you will enjoy this challenge.

We will be giving you little hygge challenges to try and incorporate into your daily lives, ones that have already helped us and ones that we want to start incorporating into our own lives.
