thinking outside the box

one my favorite places to shop for home decor items is at the swap meet. adding style to your home does not have to be expensive, you just have to think outside of the box. sure there are aisles and aisles full of junk, but hidden inside of the junk piles are real treasures! you can't be afraid to get a little dirty and you've gotta use your imagination.

so many good options here, and these are only a few of the things that caught my eye. you can add so much interest to a shelf or coffee table by throwing in a little something out of the ordinary!

this is what i ended up coming home with today...

4 bookends, a vintage bed-pan, and a very large blue ball mason jar

here is where the imagination comes in: not everyone would think to take home an old nasty bed pan but i knew i had to have it! the minute i saw it i had a project in mind. so this is what i did with my bed-pan.

i got it home and stuck some picture hangers to the back of it and now it is a very fun planter for some succulents in my bathroom. could there be a better place for a bed-pan planter than the bathroom?

i even added my bookends to my bookshelf.

i'm sure my new-to-me mason jar will hold many bouquets of flowers (hint hint, husband). the best part about it all is that for all of that i only spent $9. you can't get a deal like that just shopping at a normal retail store. and i can pretty much guarantee you no one else will have a bed-pan planter hanging up in their bathroom. for me that is a win-win.

on our way home we stopped at a cute little plant yard sale and found all of these plants for $8.

i couldn't believe our luck! succulents are all the rage right now and at your every day plant shop they will cost you $3 for each small plant. because we took a chance and stopped at some random house we got all of this for $8!

this large planter full of mature succulents was only $3! you really can't beat that. the moral of the story is: look around and ask questions, you never know what you will find! go outside of your comfort zone, it totally pays off!
