I don't know about the rest of you, but one day of sunshine and warm weather makes me want to rush to the store and buy enough flowers to plant the secret garden. I thought my DIY this week could be spring themed, to reflect my inner-crazy plant lady. Today I will show you how to make a fish scale patterned pot. You can, of course, take your own liberties with this and paint whatever you want. I personally have just been loving this pattern for months, and in the end I thought the design kind of resembled flower petals :)
You will need:
- A clay pot
-1 can of spray paint
-An acrylic paint color of your choice
I have mentioned before that I am a big fan of using items I already have around the house when I start a DIY project. This typically guarantees that even with the time you spend making something, it will end up being cost-effective! I had lots of pots left over from this craft I did for my wedding 2 years ago, so naturally I decided to make the most of them. For this project, the first thing you will do is spray paint your pots white. It may take several coats to cover well.
Next, you will draw the pattern on your pot in pencil. Obviously, mine is nowhere close to perfect. I didn't measure anything out because I was going for an intentionally imperfect look, but if you are a more precise soul, have at it! Also, the pencil marks are fairly easy to cover with the paint :)
Next you will paint over the pencil outlines in the color of your choice. I chose an antique-gold metallic paint and was really happy with the way it turned out. Depending on the color, you may need more than one coat in order to cover the pencil and have a bold design. I ended up using two coats, but I probably could have even used a third.
Also, I wanted to include a list of some of my personal favorite planter tutorials from around the web! I will definitely be trying some of these out as well :)
-These color block pots (perfect for succulents!)
-These simple tin can planters
- These pretty little lace flower pots
