Makeup Monday: Avoiding a Meltdown

As the summer days get stickier, you get sweatier and your makeup gets messier. Even in the nighttime, keeping your foundation on and your liner in place can get down-right frustrating, as no one wants to spend date night looking like a melted ice cream sundae. So what’s a girl to do? Eventually give up makeup altogether, therefore plunging into the “it’s-summer-and-so-I-don’t-care-how-I-look” abyss?

No. Instead, let’s simplify.

For all the sweaty luvvies out there, I present to you my list of tips and products to help avoid major shiny-face and or/melty-face as the summer progresses.

1)      Bringing it back to the BB Cream:

As you may remember, I’m an avid fan of Garnier’s BB Cream. Just in time for summer, they've now come out with a Skin Perfector that also offers all-day shine control. This one product can totally replace your liquid foundation, concealer, and powder. Plus this formula boasts an SPF-20 sunscreen, so you’re protected from the sun as well. It keeps your skin looking matte throughout the day without over-drying, and it’s available at drugstores on the cheap.

2)      Primers: Now that all your heavy foundations have been replaced with an airy, mattifying BB cream, you need to make sure your eyes are equally protected from the staggering summer heat. The first step in securing your eye shadow and liner – whether for a hot-weather wedding or a night out at the bar – should always be the application of a primer. As I've mentioned before, my go-to eye primer is made by Two-Faced cosmetics, and it keeps my eye shadow from creasing or coming off throughout the day.

As far as eyeliners are concerned, you’re going to have to obtain one really great stay-put eyeliner, such as Almay’s Liquid Eyeliner. No joke, it lasts all day. Like, 16 hours+. It doesn't smudge or run, no matter how humid it gets outside.

3)      Blotting Sheets: These handy papers have been around for years and are the best way to keep your makeup looking fresh on the go. Oil-absorbing sheets are an affordable and discreet way to keep the shiny forehead under control.

Great for baseball games or outdoor weddings, these usually come in packages small enough to tuck into your purse; plus blotting your face with them (gently, without rubbing) preserves your makeup.

4)      Setting Spray:

The idea of squirting myself in the face to “set” my makeup was a new phenomenon to me; and to be totally honest, it was not a product I was excited to try. But behold: the Studio Makeup Mist and Spray, from e. l. f.,  is not only an effective product, but a pleasant one to use.

After you've done your makeup, spray the product onto your face from about a foot away. It smells great and has some really beneficial ingredients, such as aloe, cucumber, and vitamin C. You can also use it on the go to re-energize tired skin

5)      Lip Stain: When it’s mega-hot out, (like it gets down here in the South), nothing looks sadder than the girl on the patio with runny, thick lipstick all over her margarita glass and probably her front teeth. In the dog days of summer, heavily-pigmented and creamy lipsticks can end up everywhere, sometimes giving the unfortunate look of a kool-aid mustache.

Avoid this sad-clown look by trying out another one of my all-time favorite products, a lip stain. Lip stains are light and should dry almost immediately upon application, so a light slick of gloss is all you’ll need to keep your pout popping despite the heat. A couple of my favorites are Lipsurgence Natural Matte Lip Tint, from Tarte, and Revlon’s Just Bitten Lipstain.

Well there you have it, dearies. You can make it through this climate crisis without raccoon eyes or clogged pores, and you can look fabulous while doing it.
