by 2 January 05, 2015Happy 2015, luvvs! I don't know about you gals, but I'm still suffering from a bit of a holiday hangover: all the glitz and glamour has left me seeking out a simpler, easier style to start my year. One way I'm looking to minimize my mirror time is by easing up on the heated tool torture to which my hair is normally subjected. "infernal hell wand," as I lovingly refer to my curling wand. This trick combines one part dreamy '40s pin-curls with one part Gwen Stefani during her Tragic Kingdom days. Trust me, the result is worth it. Step 1: Second-day hair works best for this style, as it's more likely to retain the curl. Use a texturizing spray to dampen hair all over-- I use Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray by Not Your Mother's. Step Two: Once your hair is damp, divide it into four sections by parting it all the way down the middle and back, then making a horizontal part from temple to temple. You're going to twist each of the four sections away from your face, then roll each twist around itself to create a tiny Leia-style bun. Use a bobby pin or a flat alligator clip to secure Step Three: Chill. You can sleep on these mini-buns, or you can wear them around the house for a few hours while you're binge-watching Friends on Netflix. The texturizing spray should be dry within an hour or so, but I'd let the curls set for at least two hours before you start fussing with them. (In a hurry? Though it's technically cheating on our "no heat" arrangement, you could use a hair dryer to blast some heat into each bun and then wait for them to cool off.) Step Four: Release the waves. Use your fingers to gently separate each section into curls of your desired thickness. You could use a brush to tone down the curls, but you'll be sacrificing shape to volume. Hit your heatless curls with some firm-hold hairspray, and you're ready to go. No harsh heat, no standing with the curling wand at an awkward angle over your head, no stressing later at work over whether or not you actually unplugged your infernal hell wand. I like to turn my head over and spray with hairspray to get what I call "fierce Queen Bey lioness hair." These easy, heat-free waves are definitely going to be a go-to for me this year. One other thing that is sure to be a hit in 2015? Your lipstick. Now go put some on.
